“EDUCATION IS A BIRTH RIGHT FOR EVERY CHILDREN”

ASTHA KIRAN.
Website-
www.asthakiran.org.in

Our Genesis-

Astha Kiran was established in the year 2004. It started as an effort by Ms. Sonia Singh, who some how could not accept the harsh reality that education is not accessible to each and every child. She took the initiative of imparting education to the children begging at Charbagh railway station, sweeping floors in trains, selling water in used bottles, rag-pickers etc living at and around Lucknow railway station, Charbagh. Later on, she extended her endeavour to the slum children from various places in Lucknow and also involved more and more people in her initiative. Many of these children are orphan.

This initiative took the shape of an organisation as Aastha Kiran Shaikshik Evam Samajik Vikas Sansthan which was registered under Society Registration Act, 1860 on 27 Apr, 2004. It is a non-governmental organisation whose core members include professionals, voluntary social workers and philanthropic people from all walks of life.

Our Objectives –
Our main objective is to ensure that the necessity of education should reach each and every child. To achieve this it is endeavored to bring maximum underprivileged and destitute children within the folds of Bachcho ki Duniya and Shiksha Jyoti programme.
To bring awareness among the society through education so that they are aware of their rights and can contribute further to make their society better.

Our Mission –
To reach out to the vulnerable and neglected street children and the children from poor and marginalized families and enable them to become self reliant, responsible, contributing citizens and complete human beings through providing them quality education.

A SUCCESS STORY–

Manoj, a child of about 12 years age, or rather, a man of about 12 years of age surviving on rag-picking and the sporadic sale of water filled in reused bottles at Charbagh railway station. No mother, no Father. Caught in the addiction of drugs. Seems destined for a life of a beggar or a rag-picker or a criminal or a life comparable to that of a dog!!! No. He was fortunate. Sonia Singh found him in the summer heat at platform number 7 when she had just started her mission of educating children at Charbagh railway station. Manoj was watching the whole education session from a distance. When Sonia saw him, she called him to join the others. Initially he was reluctant. But later on, sensing that other children were also from his profile, profession, locality and community, he gathered courage and politely asked that he also wish to join ‘the school’ and study like others. Thus, his education started in that rudimentary school. Slowly and slowly, he overpowered his liking for the drugs and within one year he was free from the addiction. Just because of his will power and for a slight change in his life’s direction. Within 2 years of ‘schooling’ he was able to read, write and had mastered addition and subtraction (though multiplication and division were still difficult for him). With a bit of education, came bigger dreams and increase in opportunities. He confessed his wish before Sonia Singh that he wants to get rid of this job of selling used water bottles and rag-picking. Sonia Singh, through Ashta Kiran, helped him to set up a tea-shop on a thela. At present he is earning ‘decently’ from his ‘chai ki dukan’ and still getting education in the centre of Ashta Kiran. Who knows, tomorrow, the education he is receiving today will bring bigger dreams in his eyes along with the willpower and strength, besides widening of opportunities, to achieve them.

The dreams in the eyes of several Manoj and there willpower and courage to follow them and achieve them are the real strength of Astha Kiran.

OUR PROJECT

Project Description
A-    SHIKSHA JOYTI ABHIYAN
B-    SUPPORT A CHILD(SAC)

SHIKSHA JOYTI ABHIYAN

'Shiksha Jyoti Abhiyan' is a unique project undertaken by Astha Kiran, a social organisation of Lucknow. Astha Kiran was established in 2002 by Ms. Sonia Singh, who took the initiative of teaching slum children and involved more and more people in her initiative. It is a non-governmental organisation whose core members include professionals, lawyers, doctors, voluntary social workers and philanthropic people from all walks of life.

Astha Kiran believes that the potential of every child can bloom only through education, love and opportunities that we give them. The mission of 'Shiksha Jyoti Abhiyan' is to reach out to vulnerable and neglected street children, and enable them become self reliant and responsible citizens.

 B- SUPPORT A CHILD(SAC)

 Formal education

To encourage and  help slum children to attend  formal school, astha kiran lucknow selected children from its non formal education center on the basis of student merit ,interest, need and parent commitment.

“Astha Kiran”support A child (SAC) programme which has started since 2004 helps selected children by funding their school fees and other related expenses, as well as providing these student with after school tuition astha kiran and SAC started with 33 of the 124 children are in schools. In this year (2011-12) we have admitted 15 new students in various formal schools.

Since the lucknow slum where Astha kiran operate not yet regularized and recognized as slum by the government, the children and the parent living in these areas are under constant threat of eviction. The average family size is 8 to 10 members.the parents are rag pickers, domestic workers, hawkers or fruit vendors.None of them have regular and secure source of income and are forced to survive below the poverty line.most parents cannot afford to send their children to school. Although,Astha kiran working to get more children go to regular school, many of them are forced to drop out due to family or other reason.

Purpose/Goals

  • To provide basic education to first generation learners and remedial education to some children who are in formal schools.

Our Achievements –
Many of the parents who were not sending their children to our centres have now started sending their children to study.
There is a feeling of self-confidence among the children as well as their parents.
Now several parents have started bringing their own children to the centre for whom earlier teacher themselves has to go to fetch them from their home. Now parents have also started enquiring about the status of their child and how is she/he faring among other children. Earlier nobody was even ready to hear us but now they are coming with their problems to discuss with us.

Our Challenges –
We are not able to manage the classes regularly at the Charbagh railway station centre as there are no teachers at present from the nearby locality and there is also lack of conveyance facility available with the organisation. Classes are being held there twice a week only. Please come forward to support this centre .

Propective Strategy-
Our prospective strategy is briefly enumerated below-
  1. 124 children have already been mainstreamed in private schools. Upon provision of age appropriate education to these children, we intend to mainstream all children in the formal schooling system.
  1. In addition to providing education to children working at railway station, we believe that the long term solution to enable these children become responsible citizens is to impart them skills that will generate income and ensure a dignified employment.
  1. Astha Kiran intends to have a residential home which of the name is ASHARA. Where the children, who presently live on the railway platforms, can be accommodated properly. Here all such efforts will be made to develop these children as self-dependent and responsible children.
  1. To establish a Vocational Training Center for Under Privileged Children and adolescence Girls especially for skills such as Computers and other modern vocations.
  1. To educate the backward classes.
  1. To educate the street children and working children.
  1. To admit the children in school.
  1. To joint the backward and disable people with.
  1. To aware the children about cleanliness, hygiene and health.
  1. To develop the clean and healthy environment.
